The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has launched a new mobile App. ‘For Evermore’ bridges the gap between physical and digital commemoration. Powered by Memory Anchor, this new app, available on iOS and Android puts some of the most iconic cemeteries and memorials in the palm of your hand.
They have compiled tours of some of their most visited sites around the world. Whether you’re interested in the Western Front, or the jungle battlefields of the Pacific theatre, you will be able to explore the sites and discover more about the history of the world wars and those who fought in them.
Follow the tours at your own pace and find out more about their work and the men and women commemorated. Every story, for evermore.
The new app draws on the stories in their growing collection: For Evermore – Stories of the Fallen. The CWGC have collected thousands of stories from relatives and researchers alike about some of the men and women who died during the world wars.
Now you can visit a site and scan a headstone to see if there is a known story about them. If there isn’t you’ll get that person’s commemoration information and any other details known about them – you might even be inspired to research them and create a story about them yourself, ready for the next inquisitive visitor.
This new APP is not to be confused with their existing one (rather confusingly using the same App Logo though.) which shows cemeteries near you with details and layouts etc. I watched one of the “tours” of Arnhem Oosterbeek Cemetery on the new platform and turned on the audio guide function – its awful, AI with an American accent which I think is poor from the CWGC, as its not about Americans after all. Let’s hope they improve that aspect soon.
I also have a nagging fear that by selective remembrance their is a danger of blotting out those lessor known. A slippery and careful path lays ahead for the Commission.
Please have a look at the App and share your thoughts with us.
