Meet Clive and Julian

Clive Harris MA

Director

Clive served in the Royal Signals and with Hertfordshire Constabulary before embarking on a career in military history in 1998. He first visited the battlefields as a child with his Grandfather and was regularly exploring the Western Front by the late 1980's. In addition to the publication of “Walking the London Blitz”, ” Wander through Wartime London” and “The Greater Game” he has contributed to Time Team, Time Watch, Blitz Spirit, CBS’s Legacy of War and the BBC Centenary coverage for Gallipoli 100.

His specialist battlefield subjects are The Gallipoli Campaign, the Retreat of 1914 and 1918. The London Blitz and the Italian Campaign during the Second World War are also areas of specific interest. Clive is the holder of badge number 33 within the Guild of Battlefield Guides and was elected onto the prestigious British Commission for Military History in 2010.
Clive completed his Masters degree in Great War Studies at Wolverhampton and in 2021 was the Douglas Haig Fellow. He is a proud Freeman of the City of London and currently researching a PhD on how the emergence of football impacts on the British Army 1900-1919.
His favourite battlefield to visit remains Gallipoli, but when not guiding, writing or lecturing he can be found following his passions of Charlton Athletic, Soul Music or Mudlarking along the Thames.

Julian Whippy

Director

Julian has been leading Battlefield tours since 1999 and launched Battle Honours with Clive in 2005. Alongside his growing love of history, he worked for 25 years in UK Policing as a Firearms and Covert Surveillance Officer. Prior to Policing Julian served for 5 years in the TA in the Royal Anglian Regiment.

Julian is an accredited Guide within the Guild of Battlefield Guides and is a member of the British Commission for Military History. His second book “Burning Horizon” is published to coincide with the 20th Anniversary of the Iraq War and is based on oral testimonies from Veterans of the 2003 War. His specialist battlefield subjects, to which he always enjoys returning to are Arnhem, Monte Cassino, Gallipoli, the 1918 Advance to Victory and the lessor known battles of 1915 in which he lost two family members.

When not guiding or writing, Julian is a keen war-gamer and West Ham supporter.
