Hidden Gallipoli 2024

Planned to run alongside our standard battlefield tour, this is the ideal trip for those who have previously visited the Gallipoli battlefield and are keen to see more. Focussing away from the traditionally visited spots, ‘Hidden Gallipoli’, once again, is offering a series of new walks to covering the length and breadth of the Peninsula including, ‘Helles and the French Sector’, The RND at Krithia Sector, ‘Anzac Baby 700 & beyond’ The French Landings at Kum Kale, The Raids on the Asiatic Forts and a days study on the Island of Tenados. These walks will be led by either Steve Chambers or Clive Harris, this years tour again promises to be one not to be missed.

 Tour Itinerary

Day One
Scheduled flights from London Heathrow to the newly opened Ataturk Airport Istanbul. Transfer to Gallipoli by coach to the Hotel. *This is a 5-hour transfer, all our vehicles are air conditioned. There will be a snack/toilet break halfway through the journey. All coaches are also fitted with Wi-Fi and carry complementary water.
Day Two
AM Walk 1 – ‘Helles and the French Landings’ across the ground from the French national cemetery through their battlefields to the white house, this is a walk exploring the often overlooked French front, complex terrain and hidden trenches, dugouts reveal themselves as we hear about the vicious fighting in this sector. Lunch in a Krithia cafe PM Walk 2 – The afternoon will be spent walking across the Helles Battlefield occupied by both the Royal Naval Division and 52nd Lowland Division from May to December 1915. Along dried up Nullahs and Wadis we visit a number of locations so well known to the men of the campaign including Romano’s well, Skew Bridge, Picadilly Circus and relate the ground to a number of anecdotes from contemporary memoirs of the campaign. A stop at the excellent Suvla Winery in Eceabat completes our day.
Day Three
AM Walk 3- ‘Anzac and Beyond’ We begin at the Nek and follow the Anzac Ridge, passing the Mesudiye Gun positions, uncovered trenches and a number of Turkish memorials and cemeteries before descending down to the Apex and isolated Farm position with its remote Cemetery, we then climb onto Canuk Bair to study the New Zealand assault and subsequent Turkish counter attack over this key position. Lunch in a local cafe PM Walk 4 – returning to the ground dominated by Battleship Hill, we walk across the Baby 700 position and explore the furthest limit of Anzac exploitation across this intruiging area of the battlefield that affords a tantalising glimpse across the Dardanelles
Day Four
Today we depart Cannakale and visit Kum Kale and the landings of the French forces on the Asian side of the Dardenelles, from their original landing spot we will also visit the sites of a number of Royal Naval/Marine landing parties prior to the 18th March attempt to force the Dardanelles. The day is completed with visits to a number of Ottoman coastal forts and batteries before checking into the Troia Tuscan hotel, set in its own grounds with far reaching views over the entrance to the Dardanelles, this was once the location for a British Hospital during the Crimean War.
Day Five
Tenados Visit – This offer the unique chance to visit the island of Tenados, this island played a key role in the Dardanelles Campaign, providing a scene for conferences held by both Admiral De Roebeck and Admiral Carden. A vital supply base, it was also the location for the Royal Naval Air Service led by Captain Samson, from where reconnaissance and bombing raids were frequently launched over the Peninsula.
Day Six
Return to London via Istanbul.
