Art and Architecture in the Great War – Travel Editions

In conjunction with Travel Editions – www.traveleditions.co.uk/tour/art-and-architecture-of-the-great-war-tour  we are thilled to guiding this tour.

Visiting the Battlefields of France and Flanders one is instantly struck by the architecture of remembrance. Many leading architects of the early 20th century were involved with the Imperial War Graves Commissions work at commemoration and their outstanding work still resonates over a century on. Their respective approaches to the subject can be studied and compared on this tour as we look at some of their finest examples across Flanders. The stunning cemeteries and memorials designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Herbert Baker and Reginald Blomfield feature highly, alongside lesser known but equally influential architects. Equally enduring is the art of the Great War, the iconic 1918 painting ‘Gassed’ by John Sargent still hangs prominently in the Imperial War Museum, its realism with the column of dejected, sightless men acting as a stark reminder of the realities of War. We will study several official ‘War Artists’ alongside other more casual painters who added to the vast collection of Great War Art. The tour, led by Clive Harris,  visits the landscapes that inspired them in addition to visiting the art collection at the excellent Historial de la Grande Guerre, Peronne.

Day 1: St Pancras to Lille and Ypres.
Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Lille. On arrival, an afternoon visit to the Ypres Battlefield and discuss the history of the 28th London Regiment (Artist Rifles), an infantry battalion made up of men from the art world who fought at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. We will also look at the landscape that inspired works by Christopher Nevinson (Harvest of Battle) and Paul Nash (The Menin Road). This evening there will be the option to attend the 8pm Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate memorial. Dinner at leisure and overnight in Ypres.

Day 2: Notre Dame de Lorette, Ring of Remembrance and Vimy Ridge Memorial.
This morning, we head south into France to visit Notre Dame de Lorette and cemetery, the largest French military cemetery in the world which commemorates the dead of four battles – the Battle of Arras and the three Battles of Artois, which were as costly as the better know Battle of Verdun. We will also look at the modern 2015 memorial ‘Ring of Remembrance’ by Philippe Prost, winner of the RIBA Award for International Excellence and contrast remembrance a century on with the 1936 Vimy Ridge Memorial, Walter Alward’s competition winning design depicting ‘Mother Canada weeping over her lost generation’ and commemorating over 11,000 missing Canadian soldiers in France.  Continue to Arras where the afternoon will be spent looking at the German and French memorials where we can compare and contrast as to how the nations’ artistic cultures shaped their own remembrance post war. Check-in to the hotel in Arras for two-night stay. Evening talk at the hotel by Clive Harris followed by three-course dinner and wine.

Day 3: Historial del la Grande Guerre, Peronne and Memorial Architecture
Today we visit Peronne and the excellent Historial de la Grande Guerre (Museum of the Great War), located near the heart of the Somme battlefields and housed in the Chateau de Peronne. Here, we will focus on its  impressive Art collection. We then we visit a series of memorials to study the various architect’s approach to the subject. Stops include the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (1918 Advance to Victory) by JR Truelove, himself a veteran of the war, Louverval Memorial to the Missing of Cambrai with its epic Portland stone freezes by Charles Sargeant Jagger and finally, Edwin Lutyens magnus opus, the striking Thiepval Memorial commemorating 72,000 missing of the Somme (1916).  Evening talk at the hotel from Clive Harris followed by three-course dinner and wine.

Day 4: Commonwealth War Graves Commission Headquarters and Home
This morning we head to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Visitor Centre at Beaurains, in the heart of the former Western Front. This new attraction lets you go behind the scenes of the remarkable work the CWGC undertakes to maintain British and Commonwealth cemeteries and memorials around the world. It spotlights the work of the highly skilled craftsmen, carpenters, stonemasons, mechanics, and blacksmiths, whose tireless efforts ensure that all CGWC sites globally are kept to the high standards and beautiful aesthetics associated with the organisation.  This is your chance to see the inner workings of one of the world’s foremost commemoration organisations.
